Clover Lace Cable Shawlette knitting pattern by Lavender Hill Knits

If you enjoyed creating my Handpaint Scarf, you will love creating this wonderful shawl/scarf.  A bold center cable framed by two rows of lacy cables and a clover lace pattern are the focal point of this beautiful Irish knit inspired shawlette.  The crocheted cloverleaf edging adds a whimsical Irish touch.   The cable and lace patterns are very simple and after working a repeat of the three main patterns they are easily memorized.  Once the shawl is complete, the simple crocheted edging is completed in a single row of work.  If you are a knitter that has never tried crochet, I hope this project will inspire you to give it a try since it uses only two different crochet stitches.
Make this shawlette in DK yarn (green shawlette shown in photos) for the perfect weight to wrap around your shoulders or swirl around your neck a few times when you need some extra warmth.  Knit one in sock/fingering weight yarn (pale gray shawlette shown in photos) for a smaller, more delicate shawlette that you can wear more like a scarf.

size F crochet hook
For fingering weight yarn:
350 yards of fingering weight yarn
24 or 29 inch size 6 (4.5mm) circular knitting needles
size E crochet hook
cable needle (or you can use a double point needle or straight needle in same size as circular you will be using)
tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
stitch markers

Knitting stitches used:
knit stitch, purl stitch, cables, yarn-overs, cast-on, bind-off

Crochet stitches used:
chain
single crochet

Finished measurements blocked:
Using dk weight yarn:
Approximately 92” (233cm) from end to end and 17” (43cm) from top center of shawl to bottom point after blocking
Using fingering weight yarn:
Approximately 79“ (201cm) from end to end and 14“ (35.5cm) from top center of shawl to bottom point after blocking
The finished size of your shawlette may vary depending on your yarn, your gauge and how you block the shawl.

Gauge:

The gauge I find that works nicely is:

For DK yarn:  4 sts and 7.5 rows per inch (2.5cm) (unblocked); 3.5 sts and 7 rows per inch (blocked)

For sock or fingering yarn:  5.5 sts and 9.5 rows per inch (2.5cm) (unblocked)

Adjust your needle size as necessary to get the right gauge or drape.  If you like the drape you have but the gauge is off a bit, just go with it and make some adjustments to your yarn requirements to make the suggested finished size.  If your gauge has more stitches and rows per inch, you’ll need a bit more yarn. If your gauge has fewer stitches and rows per inch you may not need as much yarn.  Note that after blocking, the drape of your yarn may change so you may want to block your swatch before starting your shawl.
